摘要

Diabetic foot syndrome (DFS) is one of the most feared complications of diabetes. Current data indicate that the incidence of diabetes foot ulcers (DFU) continues to rise worldwide. In most cases, there is colonization of multiple types of bacteria that form a biofilm which leads to chronic infection. Biofilms have a significant tolerance to topical antiseptics and systemic antibiotics, while shielding pathogens against the host’s immune system. Chronic, poorly healing wounds are assessed based on clinical presentation and use of various risk scores. Antiseptic use in DFU not only addresses the biofilm but it is part of a multimodal approach that includes the needs-oriented application of topical antiseptics, effective and individualized debridement, and immobilization of the ulcer region. Antiseptics and antibiotics should only be used when indicated, for a limited duration, and according to the individual wound situation.
