<p>Insulin is an integral part of diabetes therapy. While insulin is essential in the treatment of people with type&#xa0;1 diabetes, it is often used in the advanced stages of type&#xa0;2 diabetes. Type&#xa0;3 diabetes with its subtypes and gestational diabetes are further possible indications. A&#xa0;distinction is made between short- and long-acting insulins depending on the duration of action. Based on their structure, insulins can also be divided into human insulins and insulin analogues, where the duration of action has been modified by replacing individual amino acids. Alone or in combination, the different insulins enable insulin therapy to be tailored to the individual patient, ranging from the single administration of basal insulin to automated insulin delivery. Through the differentiated use of insulin therapies and comprehensive training of patients and their relatives, it is important to avoid systemic side effects, e.g., hypoglycemia, weight gain, and local reactions at the injection sites.</p>
