摘要

Purpose

Soil degradation and pollution pose significant threats to global food security and environmental sustainability. Biochar or arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) addition is a crucial factor to improve soil quality utilization rate. However, the precise mechanism of effects of biochar and AMF on soil health remains unclear.

Materials and methods

We compiled and summarized the existing literature on the impacts of biochar and AMF on soil health. This review summarizes the impacts of biochar and AMF on soil structure, nutrient availability, and plant growth across diverse agronomic and environmental contexts.

Results and discussion

Biochar and AMF are recognized for their ability to improve soil aggregation, enhance nutrient availability, and mitigate the bioavailability of heavy metals by increasing soil pH, thereby improving overall soil quality. Their combined application has been shown to significantly affect plant biomass, morphological traits, root development, photosynthetic efficiency, and nutrient uptake. While the integration of biochar and AMF offers promising strategies for enhancing soil health and increasing crop yield, our findings reveal several important considerations: (1) Biochar is resistant to decomposition, which may lead to potential environmental risks upon application; (2) The interaction of biochar and AMF does not consistently produce large soil aggregates and may result in finer soil structures; (3) The type of biochar plays a crucial role in determining the interaction effects with AMF on plant performance. Therefore, it is essential to consider the specific interactions between different biochar types and AMF when designing agricultural practices.

Conclusions

This review provides valuable insights into the potential of biochar and AMF to enhance soil fertility and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
