摘要

Purpose

Based on the Social Life Cycle Assessment approach, this research aims to evaluate the social performance of the extra-virgin olive oil extraction industry by analysing an Italian case study, Frantoio Franci.

Methods

The study analyses social performance by examining, through the collection and analysis of primary data from semi-structured interviews, the internal dynamics of the company, the well-being of workers, supply chain actors, consumers, and the effects on the local community. The assessment adopts a cradle-to-gate perspective, consistent with the company’s sphere of operational control. The research follows the UNEP guidelines (2020) and ISO 14075:2024 as reference frameworks for the S-LCA and the related stakeholder categories, assessing social impacts in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.

Results and discussion

The results indicate that social conditions within Frantoio Franci are overall adequate, with strong performance observed in subcategories related to workers’ health and safety and consumer health and product safety, supported by preventive measures and voluntary certifications. Positive outcomes also emerge with respect to local employment and contributions to the local community, reflecting the company’s role in sustaining territorial socio-economic dynamics. However, there are margins for improvement to strengthen Frantoio Franci’s commitment to ethics and social issues, for instance, through the implementation of a certified environmental management system, the adoption of a code of ethics, and initiatives to enhance cultural heritage.

Conclusions

The results allow for useful decisions to be made in order to outline strategies aimed at promoting social responsibility and optimizing the well-being of all stakeholders involved.
