Sublethal acephate concentrations alter the demographic and behavioral traits of the non-target larval parasitoid, Habrobracon hebetor (Say)

Agricultural pest management has shifted from reliance on chemical pesticides toward integrated pest management (IPM) strategies, where biological control plays a central role. However, sublethal pesticide exposure may compromise the efficiency of natural enemies across generations. This study evaluated the transgenerational effects of acephate on the demographic and behavioural traits of the gregarious parasitoid Habrobracon hebetor (Say) across five generations (F1 to F5). Probit analysis estimated LC5, LC30, and LC50 values as 0.01, 0.15, and 0.52 mg. L−1, respectively. At lower concentrations, developmental periods were shortened and fecundity was stimulated, whereas higher exposures reduced fecundity, longevity, and adult walking speed. Despite these effects, most population growth parameters (r, λ, R0, GRR) remained unaffected across generations. These findings indicate that acephate exerts dose-dependent and transgenerational sublethal effects on H. hebetor, which may influence its performance as a biocontrol agent. Understanding such responses is essential for integrating parasitoids within IPM programs and for minimizing unintended consequences of insecticide use.
