A comprehensive review on photocatalytically active modified boron nitride materials for degradation of organic pollutants

Boron nitride (BN), an analogue to the carbon family, finds tremendous utilization in the field of material sciences. It possesses certain impressive properties like thermal conductivity, mechanical strength, electrical insulation and better resistance to oxidation. It is used as nano-filler in various matrices, photovoltaics, hydrogen production and storage, rechargeable metal-ion batteries, water filtration, drug delivery, sensors and photocatalysis. This review specifically highlights the application of BN-based materials in photodegradation of organic pollutants present in water. BN contributes tremendously towards water purification as it adsorbs and degrades various noxious pollutants like antibiotics, organic compounds, dyes, nitro compounds and metal ions from water. This review explains in detail the various modifications applied to enhance the photocatalytic performance of BN especially under visible light irradiation. The major reasons behind such modifications are also discussed in details along with mechanisms involved in photocatalysis. In conclusion, various ways are discussed to further enhance the effectiveness of BN for degradation of other complex pollutants.
