Advancing construction and demolition waste management through technology: a framework for integration and sustainable solutions

Construction and demolition waste management (CDWM) is a highly tedious and complex process. The lack of data on construction and demolition waste (CDW) generation, characterization, disposal, and material flow makes effective planning for CDWM difficult in developing countries. Additionally, they have poor monitoring and control over illegal disposal. The use of tools and technologies can facilitate data collection, planning, prediction, optimization, and decision-making easier and more accurate. Hence, technological intervention is essential for effective CDWM. This study reviews research articles that apply various tools and technologies across different stages of the CDWM process. As building information modeling (BIM) is proven to be an effective resource management tool in all phases of construction projects, this study proposes a framework to integrate BIM into the project tendering process to promote waste elimination at source. Additionally, it introduces a new hierarchy of CDWM and a comprehensive framework for smart CDWM. Embracing technology in the proposed way would significantly enhance CDWM efficiency, curb illegal disposal, and prevent resource wastage. This study offers municipalities and policymakers comprehensive knowledge on available technologies and how their integration can resolve CDW-related issues. Adopting the proposed framework helps accelerate the transition towards a circular economy, supporting progress towards SDG 11: making cities safe and sustainable and SDG 12: responsible consumption and production.
