Seasonal changes in resting behavior of the masked palm civet (Paguma larvata), focusing on the GPS positioning success rate in urban areas of Morioka City, Japan

As GPS telemetry cannot position a tracked individual if it is hidden, a positioning failure can be assumed to indicate that it is resting in a den. In this study, three masked palm civets (Paguma larvata)—one male and two females—were tracked by GPS telemetry for about 1 year in urban areas of Morioka City, Iwate Prefecture, and their resting behavior was investigated by focusing on the GPS positioning success rate. Positioning success rates spiked after sunset and dropped sharply before sunrise. The maximum daytime positioning success rate per season was 4.4% in summer, indicating that civets are nocturnal throughout the year. Behavioral activity of civets was lowest in winter. In addition, civets tended to be active on warmer days in spring and winter, and their positioning success rate fell below the overall average when the temperature was less than 5 °C. These results suggest that civets overwinter by reducing their activity to expend less energy, especially in cold weather. In summer, however, civets were active on cooler days. They tended to avoid heavy rainfall and strong wind. They were active on bright moonlit nights in summer and on dark nights in fall and winter. They were active around sunset in summer and around sunrise in winter. These might be explained by a seasonal change in diet. Our results indicate that positioning success rate, which has not received much attention in the past, is actually an important piece of information in elucidating the ecology of tracked individuals.
