Optimizing blockchain performance in multi-use case marketplaces

Considering the ongoing digital transformation, various marketplaces may coexist for different use cases. To enable such an exchange platform to be independent of the specificities of any single use case, it is crucial to develop a generic solution that allows for the pooling of functionalities across diverse resource-sharing scenarios. To address trust issues between different marketplace stakeholders, Blockchain technology has gained prominence as a transformative solution. It relies on a collective of actors to control the regularity of transactions, rather than a single trusted third party. However, the generic nature of the solution leads to more complex transaction processing and larger data structures, which could impact the performance of a Blockchain-based marketplace. In this paper, we introduce the Orange Decentralized Exchange Place (ODEP). The second version, ODEPv2, focuses on minimizing the amount of data stored on the Blockchain, which helps maintaining optimal performance regarding Transactions Per Second and gas consumption. A comparison with ODEPv1, which stored all data on the Blockchain, highlights the effectiveness of our approach, revealing a 40% improvement in gas usage. Additionally, we discuss its application across three distinct use cases: energy, connectivity and agricultural resources exchange.
