摘要

Purpose

The aim of this narrative review is to provide a qualitative overview of the PCOS, and physical activity effects on symptom management and identify any gaps and contradictions in the literature regarding the treatment of PCOS through physical activity.

Methods

A literature search was conducted on the main scientific search engines: PubMed, and Google Scholar. The research was conducted by looking for articles where there was a correlation between physical activity and PCOS, and which physical activities were most suitable for minimizing the symptoms of the syndrome. The keywords used were therefore: polycystic ovary syndrome, physical activity, symptom management and treatment. The choice of articles fell only on articles in English, in a time frame ranging from the year 2000 to 2024.

Results

According to the data found in literature, we have obtained data that correlate the different types of physical activity (Moderate-intensity aerobic, Continuous aerobic exercise training, High-intensity interval training and Moderate-intensity aerobic, combined with strength training) and their effects on subjects, affected by PCOS, with different body compositions (Overweight women with PCOS and Normal-weight women with PCOS) and that can provide basic indications on which physical activity protocols can be used.

Conclusion

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a disorder that is not easy to manage. It can certainly be said that physical activity is a strong ally in therapy to improve its symptoms. However, further studies are needed to establish more precisely which aspects of physical activity provide the greatest benefit.
