A bibliometric analysis of trail running, skyrunning, and mountain running research
摘要
The purpose of this study was to analyze the existing body of evidence on trail running, mountain running, and skyrunning through a bibliometric approach.
MethodsA total of 316 articles published between 1984 and 2024 were retrieved from the Scopus database using a title-field search strategy, and performance analyses together with science mapping techniques (keyword co-occurrence, coauthorship, and citation networks) were applied to examine temporal trends, thematic foci, sources, and influential contributors.
ResultsThe findings indicate sustained growth with a pronounced acceleration between 2020 and 2024 (60.44% of the total output) and highlight France (22.5%) and Spain (14.9%) as the leading countries in terms of corresponding-author productivity. Three main thematic clusters were identified: a demographic–general cluster dominated by “human” and “male”; a biomechanical/neuromuscular cluster centered on “muscle,” “knee,” and “muscle fatigue”; and a methodological–contextual cluster in which “article” and “questionnaire” were most prominent.
ConclusionThis bibliometric review demonstrates that research on trail running, skyrunning, and mountain running has experienced marked growth in recent years, with clear thematic consolidation around physiology, biomechanics, and methodological approaches, supported by strong European leadership and increasingly stable collaboration networks, thereby confirming the academic maturation of this field.
