Purpose <p>To verify the longitudinal association between leisure-time physical activity (PA) and physical fitness.</p> Methods <p>A longitudinal study with 360 schoolchildren (6–17&#xa0;years; 57.5% female) from Southern Brazil. Data collection occurred in 2014 (baseline) and 2016 (follow-up), respecting a minimum difference of 1 and a half years between assessments. Leisure-time PA at baseline was assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. According to PA recommendations, students were classified as active (≥ 420&#xa0;min/week) and inactive. The practice of any PA was also considered. Physical fitness tests were carried out at baseline and follow-up, evaluating: lower and upper limb power, flexibility, abdominal resistance, agility, velocity, and cardiorespiratory fitness. The associations were tested by multiple linear regression.</p> Results <p>Active students showed better results for the upper limb power (<i>β</i> 0.095; 95% CI 0.036; 0.155), flexibility (<i>β</i> 0.084; 95% CI 0.008; 0.160), and velocity (<i>β</i> −&#xa0;0.105; 95% CI −&#xa0;0.039; −&#xa0;0.024), compared to inactive ones. Furthermore, students who performed any AP showed better results in the assessments of agility (<i>β</i> −&#xa0;0.088; 95% CI −&#xa0;0.173; −&#xa0;0.003) and velocity (<i>β</i> −&#xa0;0.097; 95% CI −&#xa0;0.181; −&#xa0;0.014), than students who do not declare any activity.</p> Conclusions <p>Our results highlight the importance of PA programs in childhood and adolescence, encompassing all components of physical fitness.</p>
