Influence of physical activity on sleep quality, chronotype, and sleep disorders: a CROSS-sectional study

Sleep is essential for health and is influenced by physiologic, psychologic, and environmental factors. Disorders such as insomnia and sleep apnea impair its quality. Chronotype affects sleep adaptation, and physical activity can improve it, although there is no consensus on the most effective type.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study investigated the associations between physical activity patterns, sleep quality, chronotypes, and sleep disorders in 227 physically active adults (56.8% male) from Paraná State, Brazil. Participants (mean age 34.9 ± 10.3 years) completed validated questionnaires, including the Horne and Östberg, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and Berlin Questionnaire.
ResultsIndicated a significant association between exercise practice duration and sleep quality. Individuals exercising for over 12 months reported better sleep quality (76.2% with good quality) than those with 0–6 months of practice (19.0% with good quality, p = 0.03). Insomnia prevalence was lower among long-term practitioners (p = 0.01). Weekly exercise volume more 2.5 h or more was associated with a lower risk of sleep apnea (p = 0.01). Regarding chronotype, morning types tended to exercise longer and prefer morning workouts, while indifferent chronotype opted for evening exercise (p = 0.01). The training period showed no significant association with sleep quality (p > 0.05).
ConclusionsIt was concluded that both duration and weekly volume of physical activity are associated with significant benefits in sleep quality and reduced risk of sleep disorders in physically active adults. In addition, the morning chronotype is associated with a longer duration of physical exercise practice.
