Effect of 1 h of training with action video game or stroboscopic goggles on visuocognitive skills related to sports performance

Both dynamic visual acuity and multiple object tracking tasks are related to the ability of the human visual system to perceive, process, respond to moving visual stimuli, and focus on specific visual information. These skills are important for performance in many sports. This study aimed to assess the effect of a 1-h training session with either action video games or strobe goggles on dynamic visual acuity and divided attention through a multiple object tracking task.
Methods30 adults (sedentary non-video game users), average of 31.73 (3.9) years, range 22 to 39, were divided into 3 groups: training with video games, training with strobe goggles, and a control group. Dynamic visual acuity was assessed using a stimulus moving horizontally at 46º/s and 26.5º/s under high and low contrast conditions. For the multiple object tracking task, eight balls were initially displayed on the screen, with three of them highlighted. After moving randomly on the screen for 10 s, participants were required to identify the three originally highlighted balls. All measures were conducted before, after, and 1 month following the training sessions for each group.
ResultsDynamic visual acuity did not show statistically significant changes with either type of training for every condition measured. On the other hand, the score on the multiple object tracking task showed a statistically significant change in the three temporal measures only in the strobe training group after 1 month of training (P = 0.017).
ConclusionOne hour of training with stroboscopic goggles is insufficient to improve dynamic visual acuity but enhances multiple object tracking task performance.
