Purpose <p>Diabetes is closely related to obesity and physical inactivity. This study examined the effects of garlic aqueous extract and resistance training on factors involved in the activation of brown adipose tissue and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, including serum ANGPTL8 concentration and the expression of FNDC5, GLUT4, and YBX2 genes in diabetic rats.</p> Methods <p>Forty-eight (48) male Wistar rats (180–250&#xa0;g) were randomly assigned to six groups (n = 8 per group): (1) Healthy control (C), (2) Diabetic control (D), (3) Diabetic with garlic extract 50&#xa0;mg/kg (D + 50), (4) Diabetic with garlic extract 200&#xa0;mg/kg (D + 200), (5) Diabetic resistance training (D + Ex), and (6) Diabetic resistance training with garlic extract 200&#xa0;mg/kg (D + Ex + 200). ELISA was used to measure ANGPTL8 serum concentration, while FNDC5, GLUT4, and YBX2 gene expression was analyzed using quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR).</p> Results <p>ANGPTL8 serum concentration did not significantly change in all intervention groups compared to the diabetic control group. A significant difference was only seen between the D + 200 and D + Ex groups (P = 0.044). The expression of FNDC5 and GLUT4 genes increased due to garlic extract combined with resistance exercise, but this increase was insignificant. The YBX2 gene expression in the D + Ex + 200 group showed a significant increase compared to the diabetic control group (P = 0.0247).</p> Conclusion <p>Garlic extract combined with resistance training significantly increased YBX2 expression in diabetic rats, suggesting enhanced browning of white adipose tissue.</p>
