Introducing the Max Lab Pennsylvania Virtual Burglary Project (MAXLAB_PVBP): an open-access virtual reality environment for criminology research

We introduce the Max Lab Pennsylvania Virtual Burglary Project (MAXLAB_PVBP), a semi-modular, open-access virtual reality environment for experimental research on crime-related behaviors and decision-making.
MethodsIn non-technical terms, we describe the MAXLAB_PVBP’s development, the properties of the virtual environment, and the integrated data collection tools (eye-tracking, movement, VR survey) and explain how the materials can be obtained and used in research.
ResultsThe MAXLAB_PVBP can be used to examine various research questions, including questions related to perceptual deterrence, decision-making, emotions, routine activities, environmental factors, law enforcement and community relations, and fear of crime. We illustrate this by providing two recent empirical examples that used the MAXLAB_PVBP and several hypothetical examples.
ConclusionsThe MAXLAB_PVBP is an open-access tool for experimental criminology, offering an immersive environment for controlled experimentation and collecting multi-modal data that does not require prior experience with VR.
