Performance Improvement of a Cover with Capillary Barrier Effects Installed on Highly Reactive Mine Tailings by the use of Calcareous Amendments and Geosynthetic Clay Liner
摘要
This study aims at assessing the capacity of modified covers with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) to control the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) when installed above highly reactive tailings. Three instrumented columns with modified CCBEs and two control columns were built and operated during a one-year period. Each column was submitted to flushing cycles every month and the drainage water was analysed to follow the water quality evolution. In the first multilayered column, the system was geochemically modified by adding a dolomite amendment to the reactive tailings. The configuration of the second column with CCBE was modified by adding a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) to the moisture-retaining layer (MRL). The third multilayered column was built with a combination of GCL and a dolomite amended layer. Results showed that adding a GCL in CCBE increases the degree of saturation of the MRL layer by at least 10%. The addition of an amended layer further improved the leachate quality by decreasing the concentration of sulfates and dissolved metals. The combination of GCL and amended layer showed a slight improvement of the water quality compared to the amended layer scenario alone. However, sulfate concentrations were still high in the leachates mainly due to a temporary source coming from the low sulfide tailings (MRL). After a year, iron and copper concentrations were insignificant, zinc concentrations stabilized around 3 mg/L and below 1 mg/L for the GCL, GCL/amended layer scenarios, respectively; these concentrations correspond to an efficiency > 99%.
