<p>Environmental pollution poses a significant threat, responsible for numerous dangers, as just a few examples, wastewater, heavy metals, dyes, organic pollutants and pesticides released into the environment are often toxic and carcinogenic, in addition to microbiological contamination with pathogens, resulting in various adverse effects. River sediments are frequently subjected to this latter, which negatively impacts biodiversity and disrupts ecosystem functions. This study aims to investigate the state of microbiological contamination in sediment samples of Sebou river, using quality indicator bacteria (Staphylococci, faecal <i>Streptococcus</i> and total coliforms), and discover the possible link between microbial populations and physicochemical parameters through PCA analysis. Our study highlighted the presence of high loads of coliforms and Staphylococci profiles compared to faecal streptococci in Sebou river sediment, also the presence of some Aeromonas species indicates the possible antibiotic contamination. This study emphasizes the importance of fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) in assessing microbiological quality and its key relations with temperature and dissolved oxygen. Although, the significant molecular results of this study support the hypothesis that our bacterial isolates can be used as bioremediation agents.</p> Graphical Abstract <p></p>
