Crystalline Cellulose Extraction From Agave Leaves With or With-no Bark and Its Potential Use As IC Bio-based Adsorbent
摘要
During agroindustrial activities, there is high amount of residues that are not adequately treated contributing to soil erosion, greenhouse gasses emission from wastes burning and leachate production during their natural decomposition, so, adequate transformation of these organic materials into valuable products is a current challenge. The aim of this manuscript is providing a revalorization technique for agave leaves obtained during alcoholic beverages production to produce crystalline cellulose that can be used as bio-based adsorbent for Indigo Carmine (IC) removal. For this, bleached and high degree of crystallinity cellulose (78. 4%) was extracted from agave leaves with-no bark by sequential alkaline oxidative followed acid hydrolysis treatment at low reagent concentrations and moderate temperatures; however, this material did not removed well IC. Our findings revealed that barking process is not necessary to improve IC sorption, i.e. highest removal yields were achieved with no-barking agave leaves (BRL) and the cellulose extracted from it (BAHL). Experimental data were fitted to pseudo-second order model (R2 > 0.90) giving the following sorption capacities for BRL and BAHL materials; 4.21 and 4.54 mg g−1, respectively and suggesting that chemisorption is the main mechanism involves in. BAHL material achieved the maximum removal percentages (almost 100%) at pH 4, 100 mesh particle size and 50 °C solution temperature. The endothermic nature of the sorption is suggests by the positive effect of temperature rising on IC removal. This paper highlights the potential use of agave leaves as a promising raw material to produce cellulose derivative with potential to remove IC from wastewater.
