Nitrogen oxides (NOx, where x = 1 or 2) are one of the most significant air pollutants, and their levels are rising due to increased transportation and the expansion of power plants and chemical industries. These compounds play a significant role in forming photochemical smog, acid rain, and ground-level ozone. Given the harmful effects of nitrogen oxides, controlling NOx emissions has become increasingly stringent, and efforts to implement reduction strategies have gained momentum. The air pollution crisis and the need to comply with strict regulations have underscored the importance of studying methods for removing gaseous pollutants, along with a comprehensive understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. Evaluating the advantages and disadvantages of each NOx removal method is essential for advancement in this field. Despite the abundant resources on NOx removal methods, a comprehensive review that fully describes the advantages and disadvantages of each technique and provides a comparative analysis is still lacking. This review aims to fill this gap by offering valuable insights to enhance existing techniques and stimulate innovation. One of the notable strengths of this research is its emphasis on hybrid systems. These systems show great promise in achieving high removal efficiency, meeting established environmental standards. The review delves into future advancements the challenges of emerging techniques and an insightful perspective on the future trajectory of this dynamic field.
