Advancements in Magnetic Nanoparticles for Microplastic Removal: A Magnetic Solution to Microplastic Pollution

Microplastic (MP) contamination has become a severe environmental problem, harming human health and marine ecosystems. Microplastics (MPs) have accumulated in numerous water sources due to plastic's extensive production and use. In recent years, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been investigated as a viable remedy for efficient MP clean up. This review presents an overview of the many magnetic nanoparticle-based strategies used for MP removal, including magnetic carbon nanotubes, magnetic biochar, hydrophobic Ferric oxide-silane-based nanocomposites (Fe-silane-based nanocomposites), Magnetic Polyoxometalate-Supported Ionic Liquid Phases (magPOM-SILPs), and oil-based ferro-nanofluids. Various characterisation and monitoring approaches are also considered to study the physical properties, chemical structure, and composition of the extracted MPs from the water. Although MNPs show promise, it is crucial to consider the environmental concerns connected to their use, including their toxicity, life cycle, and effects on human and animal health. The review paper thoroughly discusses MPs and MNPs, focusing on their importance in the clean-up procedure, different remediation strategies, and the impact of MNPs on the environment.
