Ecotoxicity Assessment of the Application of Powdered Activated Carbon to Remove the Pesticides 2,4-D and Fipronil from Water

The rapid agricultural growth has led to a surge in pesticide use, including the herbicide 2,4-D and the insecticide fipronil. These contaminants have already surfaced in aquatic ecosystems, raising concerns about potential impacts on non-target organisms. This study aimed to assess powdered activated carbon (PAC) as a sorbent to address the ecotoxicity of 2,4-D and fipronil. Treatments were conducted using water contaminated with each pesticide individually, then experimented with a combined compound mixture. After the treatment, chemical analyses confirmed the effectiveness of the remediation process, and Ceriodaphnia silvestrii was the bioindicator for fipronil, while Eruca sativa L. seeds for 2,4-D. The application of PAC attenuated the ecotoxicity of 2,4-D to E. sativa only at considerably high dosages (higher than 1600 mg PAC L–1). The effects of fipronil on C. silvestrii were reduced by applying dosages higher than 50 mg PAC L–1. In the mixture of pesticides, the most efficient treatment (200 mg PAC L–1) obtained removals greater than 99% for both compounds. Therefore, the PAC treatment effectively attenuated both individual and combined fipronil and 2,4-D, with ecotoxicological tests demonstrating their valuable and accessible role in complementing chemical analyses.
