Low BVDV antigen prevalence in dairy cattle in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE: a cross-sectional study with regional comparison

Bovine viral diarrhoea virus (BVDV) is an economically important cattle pathogen, yet epidemiological data from commercial dairy herds in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are lacking. This cross-sectional study estimated animal- and herd-level BVDV antigen prevalence in commercial dairy herds in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and compared the findings with published regional and global prevalence estimates. A total of 681 adult female Holstein–Friesian cattle from nine dairy farms were sampled using a stratified systematic approach and tested for BVDV antigen by antigen-capture ELISA. Published antigen- and RT-PCR-based prevalence data from neighbouring Middle Eastern countries and global systematic reviews were subsequently examined for comparison. The apparent animal- and herd-level antigen prevalences were 1.02% (7/681; 95% CI: 0.27–1.79%) and 33.3% (3/9 farms), respectively. Within-herd prevalence ranged from 0% to 9.1%, with no antigen-positive-animals detected in six herds. Comparative analysis (Chi-square test, p < 0.05) showed that the animal-level antigen prevalence in the UAE was significantly lower than those from Iraq (5.46–7.10%) and Saudi Arabia (12.00%) (p < 0.001), while remaining within the range reported for East Asia but below pooled estimates for West Asia. The relatively low prevalence is likely associated with routine vaccination implemented across the participating farms. These findings provide the first BVDV antigen prevalence estimates in commercial dairy cattle in the UAE and establish an important epidemiological baseline for national surveillance and BVD control. Future genotyping of circulating BVDV strains are warranted to support evidence-based vaccine selection and optimize control programs in the UAE.
