Spraying cooling room with essential oils: effects on milk, behavior and thermal comfort

There is evidence of the benefits of essential oils (EOs) for improving the performance and health of dairy cows when supplied per diet, as opposed to using them as sprays. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate whether the spraying of eucalyptus and mint EOs in a cooling room alters the behavior and thermoregulatory responses of Jersey cows during the transition period. Fourteen cows were divided into treatment (spraying with EOs) and control (spraying with water only). Daily baths were performed in a cooling room for 14 min under summer conditions. The animals’ respiratory rate (RR; movements/min), rectal temperature (RT, °C), and surface temperature (ST, °C) were measured in three daily collections (before spraying: T-before, 15 min after spraying: T-15, and 60 min after spraying: T-60). The RR was lower in the group with EO after spraying (P ≤ 0.05), with an interaction effect between collection time and treatment (P = 0.0004). The ST measurements showed differences between treatments and collection times at all measurement points, with lower values obtained in the group with EO. The behavior of the cows did not differ (P > 0.05) during the experimental period, and no difference was observed in the quality of colostrum and milk. In this study, it was observed more milk production and feed efficiency in the animals in the group with EO (P < 0.05), thus showing itself to be an option to alleviate the everyday heat stress of lactating dairy cows in the Brazilian version, period. The calves did not differ in weight gain during the suckling period. However, it was observed that calves born to cows in the EO group had higher serum albumin levels and higher erythrocyte counts, combined with lower monocyte counts in these animals. Thus, we conclude that there were benefits from daily spraying with mint and eucalyptus oil during the transition period, especially for the cow, which reduced the surface temperature without altering the internal temperature, enhancing milk production and improving feed efficiency.
