Greenhouse gases emissions and energy efficiency in ewe lambs fed hay from native Pantanal grasses

The study aimed to evaluate greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions and efficiency of dietary energy use in Santa Inês ewe lambs fed four exotic and native Pantanal grasses: Tifton 85 grass hay (Cynodon spp.) - exotic; Braquiaria grass hay (Urochloa humidicola) - exotic; Cerrado grass hay (Mesosetum chaseae) - native; and mixed hay composed of two C3 grasses native to Pantanal: capybara grass (Hymenachne amplexicaulis) - native, at a proportion of 20%, and rice grass (Luziola subintegra) - native, at a proportion of 80%. Sixteen animalswere used in a completely randomized design, with four replications per treatment. Gas emissions, dietary energy use efficiency, nutrient intake and digestibility were assessed. Forage did not affect heat production, urinary crude energy (urinary CE) and emitted methane CE.The effect of forage was only observed for CH4 emissions. Braquiaria grass hay (Urochloa humidicola) has the greatest potential to mitigate GHGs emissions when consumed by sheep in relation to Tifton 85 grass hay (Cynodon spp.).The consumption by sheep of other forage species from Pantanal resulted in methane emissions similar to those observed when animals consumed Tifton 85 grass hay (Cynodon spp.). Considering that Cerrado grass ((Mesosetum chaseae) grows in poor soils, it is important to note that they have methane emissions similar to those observed when animals consumed Braquiaria grass hay (Urochloa humidicola). The estimates of methane emissions per year when sheep were fed with the evaluated forages were lower than the value verified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. CE intake was higher for ewe lambs that consumed hay from C3 grasses and Tifton 85. Digestible energy (DE) and metabolizable energy (ME) intake were similar between ewe lambs fed C3 grasses and Tifton 85 grass hay (Cynodon spp.), and higher than those fed C3 grass hay and Braquiaria grass hay (Urochloa humidicola) and Cerrado grass hay (Mesosetum chaseae). Feeding the ewe lambs exclusively with Pantanal forage does not meet the energy requirements for maintenance and growth.Therefore, the following forage management techniques are recommended: (I) Conserving the most consumed; (II) Combining native and exotic speciesconsidering a proportion adjustment according to the nutritional requirements of the animals to be fed with the different hay produced.
