Evaluating growth performance, hematological profiles, and metabolic health in Thai crossbred cattle under tropical conditions

This research examined the growth performance, hematological profiles and blood biochemical parameters of three groups of crossbred cattle including Thai native x Brahman (TNB), Thai native x Angus (TNA) and Thai native x Charolais (TNC). The results revealed significant differences in growth performance between breed and sex significantly affected cumulative growth. TNC calves had higher average daily gain (ADG) from 0 to 200 days than the TNB calves. Different cattle breeds showed variations in hematological parameters such as white blood cell (WBC) count, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC). The TNC and TNB group showed higher levels of albumin, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine relative to TNA, signifying enhanced metabolic function and health in this cohort. By contrast, the TNB calves recorded the highest ALT/GPT values, which may indicate potential variations in liver enzyme activity among the breeds. The results showed higher growth performance and metabolic health indices in the TNC and TNA crossbred group, with TNB crossbreds having stronger immune system responses. Our findings can be used to improve breeding strategies and management approaches by enhancing calf production, health and sustainability in tropical beef cattle areas.
