<p>This study investigated effects of different sealing materials for cracked hatching eggs on hatchability, hatching characteristics, and early growth performance of broiler chicks. A total of 550 fertile eggs from 55-wk-old Ross 308 broiler breeders were allotted to 1 of 5 treatments with 5 replicates of 22 intact fertile eggs per replicate. A total of 110 intact eggs were used as a positive control (PC), and 440 eggs were artificially cracked. Among them, 110 cracked eggs remained untreated (NC) and 330 cracked eggs were sealed with beeswax (BX), nail polish (NP), and surgical waterproof tape (WT). After hatching, 250 1-d-old broiler chicks were allotted to 1 of 5 treatments with 5 replicates of 10 birds per replicate and fed diets for 10 d. Result indicated that sealing cracked eggs affected hatching characteristics and early growth performance. PC and BX treatments showed less (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05) egg weight loss than NP treatment. WT treatment had greater (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05) embryo mortality of early development than other treatments. PC and sealing treatments had greater (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05) chick weights than NC treatment. Broiler chicks of NC and NP treatments had greater (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05) body weight (BW) and BW gain than PC, BX, and WT treatments. All sealing treatments increased chick weight. In addition, sealing treatments had no negative impact on early growth performance of chicks from cracked eggs. Therefore, sealing cracks with NP could improve hatchability and chick weight without negatively affecting early growth performance of broiler chicks from cracked eggs.</p>
