Foot-and-mouth disease adversely affects energy metabolism, surrogate indices of insulin resistance and milk yield till day 180 post-infection in the dairy cow

Hyperglycaemia and inability to regain the pre-infection milk yield (MY) are common in cow recovered from foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). We hypothesized that the adverse effects of FMD on the production are due to homeorhesis in the energy metabolism. Accordingly, cows (n = 41) recovered following an FMD outbreak were bled at monthly interval from day 0 to 180 post-infection (dpi) and were assayed for indicators of energy metabolism to derive surrogate indices of insulin resistance. Blood collected ~ 2 weeks before the occurrence of the FMD outbreak for a dietary trial on these animals served as dpi 0. Further, MY was corrected for the breed, age, parity, and stage of lactation. A decrease in the serum insulin along with an increase in the concentrations of plasma glucose, glycated Hb, serum triglycerides, non-esterified fatty acids, and beta-hydroxybutyrate from 30 dpi to 180 dpi as compared to day 0 (P < 0.05) suggested that hyperglycaemia and dyslipidaemia were due to insulin insufficiency. An increase in the HOMA-IR index (P < 0.05) and a decrease in QUICKI, RQUICKI, and RQUICKI-BHB (P < 0.05) from dpi 30 to 180 indicated increased insulin resistance. A sharp decline in corrected milk yield by 4.3 kg and body condition score (BCS) by 0.5 were recorded by 30 dpi. The MY showed a progressive loss of 2.6 kg till dpi 180 though BCS remained unaffected. Loss of MY till dpi 180 is likely mediated by FMD induced insulin insufficiency and insulin resistance in the cows.
