<p>The aim here is to test the applicability of the available equations, developed using the heart girth of the Pelibuey sheep, to estimate the body weight of the Black Belly sheep. Data were recorded for 120 Black Belly lambs, divided into females (<i>n</i> = 60) and males (<i>n</i> = 60) between 6 and 8 months of age. Equations previously developed for Pelibuey were applied to Black Belly animals. Results showed that the equations provided a good correlation for estimating weight in females (<i>r</i> = 0.89) and males (<i>r</i> = 0.85). However, the observed and estimated weight distributions differed for males (<i>P</i> &lt; 0.05), while for females they were similar (<i>P</i> &gt; 0.05). The concordance test showed a poor correlation for both sexes (CCC = 0.50 for females and CCC = 0.31 for males), indicating that the accuracy of the equations might be limited, especially in Black Belly males. In conclusion, the formulas used in this work to estimate the weight of Black Belly sheep are not appropriate. Models based on breed-specific data in each area’s rearing and management conditions need to be developed.</p>
