Production performance of hybrid Pintado amazônico in the initial phase of production (0.1 to 6.3 g) in biofloc technology (BFT)

The present study evaluated the zootechnical performance of Pintado amazônico (female Pseudoplatystoma sp. × male Leiarius marmoratus) during the initial rearing phase in two aquaculture systems: biofloc technology (BFT) and a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS). The study had a completely randomized design with two treatments and four replicates. Each replicate had a volume of 1,000 L and received 250 larvae weighing 0.1 ± 0.001 g (weight ± dp). The experimental period lasted 28 days. The RAS and BFT production systems showed similar water quality variables, although there were higher concentrations of nitrate and orthophosphate in the BFT. The performance results showed higher survival rates (P < 0.05) in fish produced in the RAS (78.4%) compared with those produced in the BFT (40.2%). These differences in survival likely led to a significant higher final weight and final standard length in BFT. There were no significant differences in final biomass, biomass gain, feed conversion ratio, hepatosomatic index, and viscerosomatic index between the fish produced in BFT and RAS. Regarding intestinal morphology, there were no significant differences in the mean diameter of the tube, height, and mean width of villi, or in the mean thickness of the mucosa and submucosa between the fish produced in BFT and RAS. The current study revealed that the BFT technique can be applied for Pintado amazônico larviculture, however future studies need to evaluate management strategies and optimized practices aiming to improve survival rates under BFT conditions.
