Evaluation of broiler chickens performance, health and economic impact following supplementation with curry leaves powder (Murraya koenigii)

This study evaluated the effects of curry leaf powder (CLP) dietary supplementation on growth performance, immune response, antioxidant status, intestinal morphology, and economic returns in broiler chickens. A total of 162 birds were randomly assigned to one control and two treatment groups, each consisting of three replicates of 18 birds: T0 (control group without CLP), T1 (0.5% CLP) and T2 (1.5% CLP). The results showed that body weight and weight gain were significantly (p < 0.05) improved by CLP supplementation with the T2 group exhibiting the greatest improvement. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) significantly improved (p < 0.05) especially in the T1 group (0.5% CLP) and feed intake was lower in the CLP-receiving groups. Immunologically the T2 group (1.5% CLP) showed significantly (p < 0.05) higher levels of immunoglobulins (IgA IgG and IgM) than the other groups. Evaluations of antioxidants showed that total antioxidant capacity, superoxide dismutase and catalase activities increased significantly (p < 0.05) and that malondialdehyde level decreased especially in the T2 group. Histological examination revealed notable (p < 0.05) improvements in intestinal morphology in the jejunum and duodenum as evidenced by higher villus-to-crypt ratios and villus heights. However, the crypt depth and villus height were decreased in the ileum of T2 birds. In terms of economics, the T2 group had the highest net profit (₹44.10), followed by the T1 group (₹41.90), and the lowest profit was seen in the T0 control group (₹31.75). In conclusion, using curry leaf powder, especially at a concentration of 1.5%, is a viable, natural, and affordable method to increase productivity and profitability in broiler production.
