Acceptance of AI Companion Animals: An Investigation on the Interaction Between Humans and Artificial Intelligence-Based Companion Animals
摘要
This study provides novel insights into the evolving landscape of human–animal relationships by examining attitudes toward living companion animals and their emerging AI counterparts. Using a quantitative survey design, it assessed human perceptions and emotional bonds across three dimensions: emotional attachment, interaction and understanding, and practical considerations. Consistent patterns emerged, revealing a clear overall preference for traditional pets over AI companions across all measured domains. Despite this present tendency, the study highlights the potential for AI companions to gain broader acceptance as technological advancements continue to enhance their realism, responsiveness, and capacity for personalised interaction. As AI companions evolve and overcome current limitations, public perceptions may shift, and these artificial companions may assume a more meaningful role in caregiving, education, and domestic environments. Ultimately, AI-based companions carry the potential to gradually reshape the very concept of what constitutes a companion animal, presenting important implications for the future of the pet industry.
