Green cities, engineered beauty: ornamental plant biotechnology for urban and commercial applications
摘要
Ornamental plants hold immense aesthetic, cultural, and economic value, with global demand driven by landscaping, floriculture, and emerging urban lifestyle trends. The integration of advanced plant biotechnology has transformed the ornamental plant industry, enabling precise trait modification, large-scale propagation, and the creation of novel cultivars tailored to market needs. The synergy between fundamental research and commercial deployment is shaping the future of ornamental horticulture, with opportunities for innovation in urban greening, sustainable production, and global trade. This review highlights key biotechnological advances, including plant tissue culture techniques for rapid multiplication and conservation, genomic approaches for trait discovery, and CRISPR/Cas genome editing for precise phenotype modification. Large-scale production systems and emerging applications in green roofs, green walls, and café culture are also discussed.
