摘要

Millets are highly nutritious, stress-tolerant, staple diets of many parts of African and Asian countries, yet are termed as neglected cereals. Due to their stringent genotype, millets are feebly studied in terms of biotechnological implications and applications. The application of somatic embryogenesis in millet biotechnology possibly unwinds a wide range of applications addressing the constraints of millet production, including recalcitrancy. Somatic embryogenesis in millets drives either direct or indirect somatic embryogenesis based on the embryogenic nature of the explant. The process is affected by various biotic and abiotic factors. In the current review, a comprehensive analysis over various millets and their somatic embryogenesis protocols developed overtime has brought together focusing on the molecular mechanisms involved in the conversion of somatic cells to embryos, direct and indirect ways of plantlet regeneration, various stages of somatic embryogenesis, major factors affecting the process, histological studies, gene fidelity as well as the scope and prospects of millet biotechnology using somatic embryogenesis have been discussed.
