Advances, challenges, and future prospects of in vitro propagation in papaya (Carica papaya L.)
摘要
Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a vital tropical fruit crop valued for its nutritional, pharmacological, and industrial applications. However, its cultivation faces challenges, including genetic variability, susceptibility to diseases like papaya ringspot virus (PRSV), and limited propagation efficiency through traditional methods. Micropropagation has emerged as a transformative technique, offering solutions to these challenges by enabling the rapid multiplication of genetically uniform and disease-free plants. This review explores the principles, advancements, and applications of micropropagation in papaya cultivation. Techniques such as meristem culture, shoot-tip culture, and somatic embryogenesis are highlighted for their contributions to uniformity, disease management, and large-scale propagation. Challenges such as high production costs, somaclonal variation, and acclimatization issues are addressed, alongside solutions like tailored protocols, bioreactors, and sustainable media. The integration of modern biotechnologies, including CRISPR and omics approaches, is discussed for their potential to enhance genetic improvement and propagation efficiency. Furthermore, eco-friendly practices and innovations in automation are emphasized as critical for sustainable and climate-resilient agriculture. By providing a comprehensive overview, this review underscores the transformative role of micropropagation in ensuring the sustainability, productivity, and global competitiveness of papaya cultivation.
