What kind of a scientific revolution was the discovery of mammalian adult neurogenesis?

Recently the mid- to late-20th century discovery of mammalian adult neurogenesis—the development of new neurons (nerve cells) and their incorporation into functional neural circuits in the brains of mature mammals—has generated discussion in the philosophy of neuroscience. Here I ask a new question about this episode: Does it display standard Kuhnian dynamics of a scientific revolution, or does it better display conditions I proposed previously (Bickle, 2016) for “tools-first” revolutions in neuroscience? Open questions remain which preclude a definite answer to this question, but my emphasis below on the role of new research tools in this history provides an important science-in-practice perspective on laboratory sciences like neurobiology and recommend this historical episode as a rich source for further philosophical reflections.
