Perceived educational background discrimination and psychological distress among Chinese higher vocational college students: the roles of relative deprivation and dormitory interpersonal relationship
摘要
To examine the association between perceived educational background discrimination and psychological distress among higher vocational college students and to test the mediating role of relative deprivation and the moderating role of dormitory interpersonal relationships, 2962 students completed measures of perceived educational background discrimination, relative deprivation, dormitory interpersonal relationship quality, and psychological distress (SCL-90). Results indicated that (1) perceived educational background discrimination was significantly and positively correlated with psychological distress; (2) relative deprivation partially mediated the association between perceived educational background discrimination and psychological distress; and (3) dormitory interpersonal relationship quality moderated both the direct association between perceived educational background discrimination and psychological distress and the second stage of the indirect effect (i.e., the path from relative deprivation to psychological distress), such that these associations were stronger when dormitory interpersonal relationships were poorer. These findings have implications for reducing psychological distress among higher vocational college students and mitigating the negative impact of educational background discrimination.
