<p>The NASA Psyche mission represents a milestone in the application of solar electric propulsion for deep-space exploration. Developed collaboratively by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and Maxar Space Systems, the Psyche spacecraft integrates a commercial high-power solar electric propulsion chassis with JPL’s heritage in autonomous deep-space flight systems. The spacecraft uses no chemical propulsion – it employs a fully electric Hall thruster based propulsion system augmented by nitrogen cold-gas thrusters. The design adapts commercial hardware for thermal, power, and fault protection to the deep space environment. Following significant challenges in the verification and validation of its guidance and navigation software, the successful launch of Psyche in October 2023 validated its hybrid commercial-NASA development model for planetary missions. The Psyche experience offers key lessons for future cost-capped, SEP-enabled deep-space missions.</p>
