The concept of typicality in Russian literature of the 1840-80s and the development of statistical methods of data analysis
摘要
In the nineteenth century, statistical methods of data analysis became a convincing rhetorical device used by Russian writers and critics, from Belinsky to Tkachev. These methods should confirm the plausibility of an artistic image, its typical character. My study of the discursive constellation of statistics and literature from the 1840s to 1880s demonstrates the homology between the transformation of the concept of typicality in Russian literature and the evolution of trends of Russian statistics.
