Temperature Regime of Building Foundation Soils Under Artificial Freezing Using a Refrigeration Unit: Field Studies

The paper presents research results on thermal stabilization of foundation soils beneath a building with pile foundations. The main regularities in the formation of soil-temperature regimes during their freezing using a refrigeration unit (chiller) and subsequent natural thawing in the summer period have been established. The study determined the cooling rate of soils in relation to their distance from the freezing tube and defined the effective cooling zone. The main characteristics of the soil-thawing process following artificial freezing are presented. The effectiveness of thermal stabilization in maintaining the bearing capacity of pile foundations using a chiller across a large-scale construction site has been demonstrated.
