Failure Modes of an Ice-Rich Slope Under Freeze-Thaw Cycles

In cold regions, ice-rich slopes often undergo failure in response to freeze-thaw cycles. To study the failure mode of ice-rich slopes, model tests were carried out in a refrigerator under variable freeze-thaw cycles and ice contents (12%, 16%, and 20%). The results showed that an increase in ice content causes the “zero curtain” phenomenon in the slope, and its position and duration become deeper and smaller as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increases. An increase in the number of freeze-thaw cycles makes the slope temperature more sensitive to changes in ambient temperature, and the soil thawing and freezing depths become larger. Under the action of freeze-thaw cycles, a tensile type of crack collapse occurs in the horizontal direction of the slope, and creep is the main failure mode in the vertical direction. When the volumetric ice content increased to 20%, cracks formed, slope slip reached 7.5 mm, and increased with higher ice content.
