<p>Fillet-type samples made of structural steel were modified with carbon ions by ion implantation. X‑ray analysis and photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the implanted layer mainly consists of iron and carbon with a&#xa0;small amount of oxygen. Chromium compounds Cr<sub>23</sub>C<sub>6</sub> were found inside the layer. The corrosion resistance of the implanted material significantly increases compared to the original material. Samples implanted with carbon ions demonstrate high low-cycle fatigue characteristics.</p>
