Towards an enhanced understanding of animal ecology and aquatic systems via an integrated stable isotope-acoustic telemetry approach—a review and future directions

Rapid environmental changes create novel challenges for species and ecosystems and their management, resulting in a need for more insights into their function, drivers, and mechanisms, and for continuous learning. The movement toward interdisciplinary approaches that combine different tools provides the means to address this, and the application of stable isotopes (SI) and acoustic telemetry (AT) is gaining attention. Here, we provide a comprehensive review of how SI and AT, used in the study of trophic and spatial ecologies, respectively, have been combined in research over the last two decades. We highlight the diversity in utilization of this integrated approach across existing studies based on the objectives, systems, taxa, and analytical approaches. We identified an increase in the use of the two methodologies as complementary tools to inform applied and theoretical science, but also a lag in the holistic analysis of these two data types that suggests an underutilization of the potential of these tools. We recommend that new analytical methods need to be adopted and/or developed to synthesize SI and AT analysis and offer suggestions for SI-AT holistic use for future research that addresses both applied and theoretical questions.
