Workplace romance: a systematic literature review and future research agenda through a multidisciplinary lens
摘要
This study aims to analyze the existing research and summarize the literature on the “Workplace Romance (WR)” domain over the last 40 years, ranging from 1985 to 2024. The primary outcome was obtaining 90 studies from the Scopus database and deploying the VOS viewer and Biblioshiny to conduct the bibliometric investigation, performance analysis, trending topic analysis, and bibliographic coupling to uncover the existing themes. The Bibliometric analysis discloses the most significant stakeholders in the current domain of study. This study also uncovers five main research themes in the current domain of literature, i.e. Motivation, perception, and Implications of WR (Theme 1), Dynamics, Boundaries, and Outcomes of WR (Theme 2), Organizational Dynamism, Policies, and Employee Well-being of WR (Theme 3), Justice, Ethics, and Management of WR (Theme 4) and Workplace romance and Sexual Harassment (Theme 5). Finally, this study synthesizes various theories and associated constructs using the WR construct's Antecedents, Decisions, and Outcomes (ADO) model. The study also advances the literature by significantly dividing them into pre-2010 and post-2010 in order to find out the advancement of WR. The study advances theoretical understanding by integrating 19 key theories studied across domains, highlighting the complex, multidisciplinary nature of workplace romance and the roles of power dynamics, culture, and mediators. Practically, it urges HR to develop fair, transparent WR policies, provide training, and support emotional well-being to foster workplace harmony and performance.
