Sustaining Good Samaritans: Evaluating Volunteerism After Crisis
摘要
We provide a theoretical model of volunteerism that investigates the “lifespan” of volunteerism in disaster-afflicted areas and highlights mechanisms that drive people to volunteer over time. In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey in August 2019, we conducted two studies on volunteer populations in the region. Our findings suggest that significant differences exist between those who do not volunteer, those who volunteer during crises, and those who engage in sustained volunteering, highlighting the need to attend to variables significantly associated with increased volunteerism, such as individual-level variables that motivate and create meaning for volunteers and agreeableness as a personality trait.
