Aims <p>Invasive plants <i>Robinia pseudoacacia</i> are dominant when planted with native <i>Platycladus orientalis</i> in the Loess Plateau. Interactions of trees via belowground factor combinations (BFCs) of soil solution, roots and associated hyphae of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important in regulating invasion and coexistence between plants. Therefore, it is necessary to reveal the mechanism of BFC-mediated invasion of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i>.</p> Methods <p>We first collected soils from mixed stands of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> × <i>P. orientalis</i> (Reshaped-AMF) which had been planted for 13&#xa0;years and nearby native grasslands (Native-AMF) as AMF inocula. Then we conducted a mesocosm experiment with <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> and <i>P. orientalis</i> including three kinds of BFCs. Within each kind of mesocosm, the AMF treatments were inoculation with Reshaped-AMF or Native-AMF; the neighbor treatments contained intraspecific neighbor of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> and <i>P. orientalis</i> respectively, and interspecific neighbors when two tree species were grown together.</p> Results <p>Compared to its monoculture, the presence of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> as a neighbor improved the growth of <i>P. orientalis</i>, mainly by increasing root branching and reducing soil hyphal density. Reshaped- AMF significantly decreased the biomass of <i>P. orientalis</i>, but increased the biomass of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> when interspecific root contact existed. This different response to Reshaped-AMF of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> and <i>P. orientalis</i> with interspecific root contact could be attributed to root development.</p> Conclusion <p>The soil AMF reshaped by <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> and <i>P. orientalis</i> enhanced the root development of <i>R. pseudoacacia</i> to improve its invasion. This facilitation seemingly took place through root contact.</p>

Aims

Invasive plants Robinia pseudoacacia are dominant when planted with native Platycladus orientalis in the Loess Plateau.
