<p>Orchids, classified under the family Orchidaceae, are a distinct group of angiosperms capable of growing as terrestrial, saprophytic, lithophytic or mainly epiphytic plants. Exhibiting incredible diversity, the family includes more than 26,000 species. Orchids have been part of traditional medicine in different cultural communities worldwide since ancient times. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P), our systematic review on orchid chemistry and their antimicrobial activities revealed 70 inclusive reports curated from 2545 published articles. A total of 69 species were phytochemically studied for this purpose with a total of 195 secondary metabolites discussed. The genera <i>Bletilla</i>, <i>Coelogyne</i> and <i>Dendrobium</i> are the best explored ones for their antibacterial activities, whereas the genus <i>Bulbophyllum</i> was primarily investigated for anti-fungal properties. Notable findings include a study on <i>Beltilla striata</i> featuring blestriacin, a dihydro-biphenanthrene with significant antibacterial activity against gram positive MRSA (MIC 2&#xa0;µg/mL), and dendrocoumarine isolated from <i>Dendrobium nobile</i> with activity against the gram negative bacterium <i>Eschericia coli</i> (MIC 0.6&#xa0;µg/mL). Nevertheless, there have been no significant antifungal constituents reported from orchid bioprospecting. Overall, the study reveals orchids as a potential source for antibacterial and less so for anti-fungal agent discovery, for which this review provides basis for further exploration.</p>
