Beyond nutrition: a two-decade systematic review of the ethnopharmacological potential and therapeutic promise of Amaranthus sp.

Amaranthus species, which are native to tropical America and are now extensively grown in Asia, Africa, and the Americas, have received considerable interest because of their ethnopharmacological and high nutritional value potential. Amaranthus comprises 70 species, among which 17 varieties are edible including Amaranthus blitum, A. lividus, A. viridis, A. gracilis Desf., A. tricolor, etc., and the notably different vegetable Amaranthus tricolor that is rich in bioactive compounds with generally appreciated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, antimicrobial, and antimalarial properties. In this systematic review of literature spanning from 2000 to 2023, we highlight the therapeutic potential and health-benefiting properties that Amaranthus displays over more than two decades. Despite its historical significance as a staple crop, gaps remain in the standardization of its nutritional profiles, bioactive interactions, and optimal extraction techniques. Through a bibliometric analysis of data over two decades, we identify trends in global research, with notable contributions from India, South Africa, and China, and growing international collaborations. Methodologically, this review synthesizes data from peer-reviewed studies, including experimental and clinical findings, to assess Amaranthus’s role in managing oxidative stress, inflammation, cancer, liver disorders, gastrointestinal health, and diabetes. The findings indicate Amaranthus’s potential as a nutraceutical and therapeutic agent due to its dense nutritional profile, rich in carotenoids, minerals, and antioxidants. Future research directions should prioritize addressing environmental impacts on nutrient levels, enhancing gluten-free applications, and optimizing preservation techniques. Overall, this study emphasizes Amaranthus’s resilience, adaptability, and therapeutic promise, positioning it as a valuable crop for sustainable agriculture and global health interventions.
