<p>The present article was devoted to the study of the chronic toxicity and mutagenic effect of a photoprotective gel based on melanin in the preclinical study stage. The photoprotective gel, when applied repeatedly to the skin, was found not to have a toxic effect on the quantitative composition and morphology of peripheral blood, kidney and liver function, and central and peripheral nervous systems of experimental animals (rats). The gel also did not have a significant effect on prothrombin time. Repeated (30 days) use of the gel led to an increase in activated partial thromboplastin time by 67% (<i>p</i> ≤ 0.01) and clot recalcification time by 25.6% (<i>p</i> ≤ 0.01) relative to the control group of animals. The melanin-based photoprotective gel did not exhibit genotoxicity in an <i>in vivo</i> test for the induction of chromosome aberrations in bone marrow cells when applied cutaneously at the used doses.</p>
