Comparative Evaluation of Spectrophotometric Determination of Triterpene Compounds in the Aerial Parts of Ethiopian Sage (Salvia aethiopis L.)

Currently, plants with triterpene saponins in their chemical profile are of therapeutic interest. Their effectiveness in the treatment of heart and vascular diseases and neoplasms of various origins has been noted. However, methods for their quantitative determination are few in number and mostly labor-intensive and time-consuming. The aim of the present study was a comparative experimental determination of triterpene compounds in the herb of Ethiopian sage (Salvia aethiopis L.). The presence of triterpene compounds was confirmed by thin-layer chromatography. Quantitative determination was carried out spectrophotometrically using two alternative methods. The content of triterpene compounds recalculated as oleanolic acid in the herb of Ethiopian sage was 1.241 ± 0.002% (method No. 1) and 1.083 ± 0.002% (method No. 2). A comparative analysis of the two methods used showed that the results were comparable.
